Putting gender-responsive Sustainable Land Management into practice to support scaling

Launch of the new UNCCD-WOCAT gender-responsive SLM tool and discussions with its developers and users.

Summary

This event is organized by United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) and the World Overview of Conservation Approaches and Technologies (WOCAT).

AICCRA's Stephanie Jaquet will speak about building an accelerator program in Senegal for women who lead agribusinesses.

Direct and indirect gender-related barriers limit the adoption of SLM practices by women. The interaction between factors such as land tenure insecurity, land availability, education and literacy, gender norms and roles, access to information as well as agricultural inputs, extension services and financing play a role in limited adoption of SLM technologies by women.

In line with the UNCCD Gender Action Plan (GAP) and guided by the idea to build forward better, UNCCD and WOCAT are currently jointly carrying out a project on gender-responsive SLM. One of the integral components of the project is the development of a tool to assess the gender-responsiveness of SLM technologies and approaches and to further improve their gender-responsiveness and the adoption rate by women.

The aim of the side event is to share the new gender-responsive SLM tool and show how it can be applied to support the design and evaluation of SLM projects and programmes with a gender lens. The UNCCD and WOCAT will present the results from the testing of the tool in over 14 countries – amongst others by sharing testimonies - and will launch the SLM Gender profiles, a joint UNCCD-WOCAT product, as a key knowledge product on SLM and gender.

The event will highlight the relevance of the tool and the data in the context of UNCCD work and Gender Action Plan (GAP) and will discuss its application in the context of LD/SLM/LDN programmes and projects.

A panel with representatives from different organizations will provide insights and concrete case studies of gender-responsive projects and programs and discuss how the tool and gender data is relevant for project design and realization.
